Scheme of Work
SM327U   Research Methods for Level 3

Assessment Details:

There is only one assessment for this module:

An individual written piece of work, no more than 2500 words maximum.

Students are required to:
Part 1: Discuss and critically analyse the research approach used in the supplied case study.
Part 2: Using the research problem from the case study, choose and critically evaluate (only) three different strategies/approaches from the list below.

·       experiment;
·       ethnography;
·       grounded theory
·       action research
·       a survey;
·       a case study;

YOUR ANSWER SHOULD FOLLOW THE FORMAT BELOW:

1. Critically review and discuss the given research study for its methodology and methods

Guidelines:
Is there a coherent research design capable of achieving the stated aims and objectives?

1. Critically examine different approaches to the same research problem by taking the research question from the given research study

a.       Take three strategies/approaches from the following list (it must be 3 strategies/approaches that have not been used in the given research study)

·       experiment;
·       ethnography;
·       grounded theory
·       action research
·       a survey;
·       a case study;

1. Apply each of the selected strategies /approaches to the research question

1. You will need to ensure that you are clear which method(s) with the strategy/approach would be used and therefore, which methodological paradigm.  For example, a case study could be either qualitative and use interviews or quantitative and use a questionnaire (or indeed it could be a combination of both)

1. For each of the chosen strategies / approaches analyse, discuss how the data would be analysed and interpreted, what techniques might be used.  Consider any problems you might encounter.

Guidelines:

* Ensure you support the strategy/ approach you are discussing with suitable literature / theory and therefore, references from books and journals.
* Discuss and evaluate what problems you might encounter for each strategy you apply? For example would your strategy meet all the objectives? Would you need to consider changing the objectives? Etc…
* The discussion might consider the implications of this exercise upon how knowledge (in essence the answer to the research question) is or could be changed/altered. If you change the methodology/methods how might this alter the findings?

·         Is each of the strategies you apply a coherent research design and approach which is capable of achieving the research aims and objectives?
